Several months ago I came across an article that was written by a gal who claimed that Non-Christian parents were doing a better job at raising well-rounded, well-behaved, higher functioning, kinder, more loving children than Christians parents. Although this article was solely opinion and had no statistical or concrete evidence to support her claims, I must admit that it rocked me at the core. Why? For several reasons: one being that John and I were dealing with teen drama that was wrecking us. To honor my children and family, I will not go into details but I can tell you that teens are both amazing and monstrous creatures! Lol! When our children are little our focus is keeping them alive, constantly worrying that what we are doing or not doing will in some way affect their lives. Will they swallow a toy? Did I secure the bookshelves good enough to the wall, so when the child climbs it, they won't be crushed to death? Did I put covers in all the outlets, did I secure all the toilet lids, did I lock all the doors, did I cover all the bases when child proofing my house? And on and on and on..... And reading the latest parenting materials being published only exacerbates these fears. All the while, we are trying to instill values, rules, hierarchy, love, compassion, sharing, ect. ect.. When your children reach the teen years, everything shifts. They are trying to establish their independence from you, which is important to their adult life. They are trying to figure out who they want to be, which can look at times like heaps and heaps of never ending dirty laundry. They are trying find out who they want to be when they grow up, which can crush every dream you've ever had for your child. And they do all of this with raging hormones, peer pressure, social media, what's trending --they are being pulled in a million different directions at a time when life's most complex and confusing. Your teen will disappoint you. Your teen will cave under the pressure. Your teen will cause you to doubt every parenting decision you've ever made. Your teen will make you feel insignificant. You will not be cool. You will not be their hero. They will rebel against everything that is you! You must, however, take NONE of this personally, as this is the nature of growing up, declaring independence, and becoming an adult. I did it to my parents, and so did you.
Secondly, my children grew up in the church. Infact, my children have spent their entire lives in the church. And I'm not talking begrudgingly so. Church life, ministry, and pastoring has been a complete blast for our children. It was their joy! Please hear me correctly when I say this: I didn't fill their lives with a bunch of rules and regulations for being in church. Yes! we have rules and lots of them, and consequences because boys really-really need boundaries in order to survive this life. Lol. However, a wise mentor and dear friend taught me to treat church no different than our home. And so I did! They played at church, they ran in the church, they played hide-n-seek, they got into all kinds of shenanigans. When I had to correct them, I did it no different than we did at home. I didn't shame them nor were my expectations higher because we were at church. I also didn't allow anyone in the church to hold my children to a higher standard, and if they tried this momma bear gave them the what-for! My kids were allowed to be kids. They were allowed to be exactly who they are in the house of God --no dressing up, no pretending, no expectations -- come as you are.
As I read this article, at a time that I was feeling like the stupidest, most naive parent in the world, doubting every decision, recalling every mistake, I couldn't help but think, "Maybe you are! Maybe just maybe life would be different today if I raised my children outside of the church Maybe you are right." Then I came to my senses! HELL NO my children wouldn't be better off without Jesus, HELL NO my children wouldn't be better off without the church, and HELL NO my children wouldn't be better off without a body of believers. John and I are walking billboards of the redeeming power of Jesus, the transforming power of the church, and the heaps of miracles and blessing that can only come from being in a body of believers. Let me tell you this, my non-christian life made me both a batterer and battered, both a victimizer and victimized, and completely void of a moral compass. My non-christian life never offered me hope for my circumstances nor my future, it never provided protection from life's storms, and it never taught me how to appropriately love myself or others. I was not a good friend -my love for people was always unbalanced. My decisions and lifestyle were based on what 'feels' good, which only lead to a long line of horrible decisions, excessiveness, and hardships. In the wake of my non-christian life, there are 100s of victims, myself included.
The greatest effect this article had on me, at the core of all my doubts and worries, was fear. Rearing it's ugly head and uprooting my wisdom and shaking up my sound mind. Why? Truth! The truth is that I know my God, my saviour, my counselor, but I also know my enemy -the devil. Truth can be a very scary, hard to digest, an enormous obstacle course. Here is what I know about the enemy of my life: this world is under the control (not authority) of the evil one. This is his playing ground and where he wages his wars. His relentless pursuit is to kill, steal, and destroy. He prowls like a hungry lion looking to devour. Ephesians 6:12 puts it aptly: For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Or as the MSG version so appropriately sums it up: This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.
Here it goes, the big fat FEAR in the room. Did I knowingly subject my children, my family, my marriage to the attacks of the evil one by living a life of faith? There I said it! (phew!) This seriously shook my foundation. Listen carefully: when you do not believe or live a faith-filled-Jesus-pursuing life, the devil doesn't care about you. He doesn't care about your do-gooding. Your charities don't catch his eye, nor does your kindness or compassion. Non-christians go unnoticed -not even a blip on his radar screen. You are not a threat to his schemes or plans no matter how many people you help; you do not concern him one bit. Those of faith, who do things in the name of Christ, however, have all of his attention. This is why I was frozen in place like a deer in the headlights with a giant lump in my throat. I don't want my children to have the odds stacked against them, I don't want them to have the attention of any kind of darkness, and I certainly do not want to the evils of the world to wage war against them. This honestly scared the dickens out of me.
Here comes the big BUT! No matter how afraid I was in that moment God reminded me why I live a life of faith: First, He is worth it! He is worth it all! I want everything my kids do -the work of their hands and minds- to change the world not simply just be do-gooders. I want them to reveal their faith every where they go, I want them to insight riots of the heart so that people will turn their lives over to Christ, I want them to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. I want them to carry His hope to the hopeless and bring rest to the weary. I want to hear of their good-works everywhere I go. I want people to see the light of Christ in them. I want them to shake this planet! Secondly, His promises are true, steadfast, and rock solid. He promises to never leave or forsake (turn His back on) us. He promises that He goes before us, fights for us, and commands His angel armies to protect us. He promises victory, overcoming power, conquering all matters of life , and we are a co-heir in Christ. He is provider, He is savior, He is healer, He is a friend, He serves us as we serve Him, He guides us, and He gives us God-supernatural wisdom and strength. He is never ending, never weary, never tired, never at the end of His ropes. He is God, Master of the Universe, He is mighty and powerful, He knows all things, He created all things -He. Is. God.
Here's the thing: you may be a better parent than me, you may be getting right all the things I'm messing up. You may be crossing every 't' and dotting every 'i', and following parenting tips to the letter. Here's the real thing: I don't really care. I don't care what you think of me, whether you see me at my best or at my worst. I don't care if your kids are getting better grades, are better at sports, are better looking, and kinder....and so on. All I care about is that my children love God with ceaseless abandon. I care only about the condition of their hearts and that they see themselves through the eyes of Christ. I want them to go to bed each night knowing that I love them -really love them unconditionally with no expectation. I want them to see royally messing life up and tearful humble apologies. I want them to see life's ups and downs and how to lean on Christ in all matters. I want them to see and know the value of the church and the richness of being in a body of believers.
I readily admit that you do not have to be a God-believer to be a great-love-filled parent, good to people, to advocate for others, and to effect change. The conclusion of this letter will not be assigning a winner and a loser. All I can testify to is that I want heaven to touch the hearts, minds, and souls of my family. I want my children to change people's eternal life not simply improve the quality of it only while on this earth. I want more than feeding the poor, loving the lost, and caring for the orphans and widows. A full belly isn't enough. Shelter isn't enough. Having a family isn't enough. Being a companion isn't enough. Loving people isn't enough. I want more. I want my children to want more. I want them to be all this and more -bringers of hope to a world so desperate for it.

In Over My Head
Today I climbed the Butte again, my new favorite pass time. I dropped my little Joe at school, put in my ear buds, called my bestie, and set off up the trail. Although the Butte looks like "a dollop of Daisy" in comparison to my beloved Rockies, this hike it HARD! The hike up is about a mile and a half, but it is straight up; a swirly-twirly incline that provides a 500ft gain in elevation. It's just a heap of dirt, trees, and sage that God plunked right in the middle-ish of Bend. A little embarrassed, I tried to carry on a convo with my girl (huffing and puffing and wheezing) the best I could. I knew if I could simply pace myself, endure the climb, and persevere past the last 90% incline to the top, I would be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Bend and it's surrounding mountain ranges.
Once I made it to the top, I said my goodbyes and sat myself on the west-ish ledge and gazed out over Bend and it's snowy capped mountains.

| My View |
My heart cried out for this city; a city I don't know, a community that I am unfamiliar with. Listen, I understand obedience -I go where He goes, I stay where He stays, His people are my people.... However, I don't understand His plan in this moment; I don't have a 5 year view of this moment in my life. You know what I'm saying? Why did he move me here? What is my calling in Bend? Who exactly are my people?
As I prayed over Bend, I cried out "WHERE? Where do I fit into all of this Lord?" His reply? "Be still, be patient!" Phooey!! Lol! Okay! I was like, " I know, I know. I am still Lord. I do wait on You, but it's too much! I have too much love in me that I may just drown if I don't find my people." This heart burns for the Lord, it burns for His people. When I dared to pray, " Lord let my heart love people like You do, let me see people the way You see them," it wrecked me. I cannot contain this supernatural love I have for people. In the natural, I can happily go through my life in a bubble and never let the 'concerns of man' mess in my atmosphere, but my spirit cries out for deep, life altering, generational bonage breaking, total transofmration, light breaking through the darkness kind of life. Where my hands dip in to help still the waters, where my words bring life to the dead places, and where my faith rocks the foundation of an entire city.
As I watched the sun rising higher in the sky, I noticed that is was burning off the fogginess and clouds. I almost jumped to my feet, but refrained because I didn't want to scare the man and his dog that were sitting nearby -LOL. My prayer changed into this: Lord! like the sun burns off the things that inhibit my view, -my full panoramic view of heaven touching earth- like it dissipates the directional confusions of fog, -hiding my path- and like it sweeps away the clouds, -clarity in the storm- BURN in me! Burn away the mode of operation that leads me only to depression and isolation, burn away negative thinking patterns that tell me that I am not enough, burn away confusion because with You I am never directionless, burn it all off!
What's next? I don't know but I'm ready! I'm excited for what's next! I'm ready to shake up this city and ready to have the greatest adventures with the Lord. I'm thrilled to see what the Lord is doing in my home, in my heart, in John's heart, and in the boys' hearts. I see him piling up all of our ashes from this past few years and creating the most beautiful picture of freedom and grace that is drawn right over the tops of each Rivera heart. No matter what......whether I sink or whether I swim it makes no difference when I'm beautifully in over my head -Jenn Johnson.

A Good Father?
Several weeks ago, one of our amazingly talented worship leaders introduced a new song (new song to me) called Good, Good Father that has rocked my world since she showered us with song. I must add that I adore this woman because of what an honorable, fun-loving human she is, and when she and God get together it leaves you breathless -she is good people.
Anyhow, as I sung along with her, I was struck with the thought that I have no idea what a good Father is. Here's the chorus line so we can understand what I'm going to lay down:
You're a good, good Father.
It's who You are, it's who You are, it's who You are.
And I'm loved by You.
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am.
I never experienced a good, good Father, which had me at a loss for how to identify with this song. I couldn't put my finger on God being a Good Father. What does that even mean? If I had a good Father, that would make me what? Seriously, what? What does it mean to sing, you're a good Father, and that I'm loved by Him, AND that makes me who I am? I was completely confused. Being a discarded, unwanted daughter is all I know, and I know how that shaped me -made me into who I am. I never considered that a daughter who grew up with a loving Father would think, feel, and act WAY different than me. A girl is a girl, right? Not according to this song! How my heart longed for a good Father -I literally couldn't breath as revelation of who I could have been struck me across the face.
And even though I'm a good church girl (lol!), I would cringe anytime I heard someone call God Father, or Dad, or Papa, or -the worse- Daddy! I sometimes would have to excuse myself because I thought I was literally going to puke. What a disrespect to God, I thought. He's better than a Daddy -you people have straight lost your minds! I wanted to yell in there face -the yell where spit hits their face- HE IS NOT A DADDY -STOP CALLING HIM THAT!!! I'm passionate people, not perfect.
Knowing I needed help, I asked God to show me what a Good Father is, to explain to me what that looks like. Boy did He!
As a child from an addicted, abusive home, I learned to read people and their emotions at a very early age. I can see emotion as acutely as an artist discriminating between the variation of colors. I can hear emotion as precisely as a musician tuning an instrument. I can taste emotion as intensely as a French chef's sensitive palate searching for the perfect flavor combination. I can feel emotion as sharply as a murderer strangely the life out of their victim. This is not a gift, it is a heavy unnecessary burden (however, I am hopeful that God will turn this into something beautiful) What I discovered, when talking with a dear friend today, is that my children lack this ability. I thought they were just stupid or naive (being truthful), because life would have been very-very dangerous for me, if I lacked this ability. However, my children do not have this ability, because the DO NOT need it! They have a good, good, father. They feel safe no matter where they are, no matter what is happening around them, and no matter who is around. Why? Because they have a good, good Father -John's love and protection is real and dependable and trustworthy. John is a true reflection of God's love and protection. How He loves us!
I was also reminded of all the little girls in my life, oh! how I adore them! They are FULL of love, silly, free, smiley, confident, hopeful, so,so trusting.... as I thought of them, God showed me that each of these little angels have an ah-mazing father. This is the difference! The are unafraid because of him. They feel beautiful because of him. They are confident because of him. They are hopeful because of him. The are safe because of him. They are protected because of him. They don't posses a single worry because of him. They will conquer this world because of him. That's the difference -the love of a Father- it is immeasurable, invaluable, indispensable.
As I kept rolling around this idea of having a good Father, the desire in me to change and live like I had/have a good, father suffocated me. I can't get a do over, but I can own who I am going to be today. I can't stop the pain, anger, or sadness of my father's decisions to toss me aside, I can only acknowledge that it hurts and remind myself that I do have a Good Good Father in Heaven. I don't know if I'm ready to call God my Daddy (lol) but I sure as heck want to -I want everything that that means, everything it equates, it's freedom. He IS a good, good Father. He will never leave me nor disown me, He is my kinsman redeemer, He thinks I'm courageous -a real prize! He sings over me and takes me in His great big arms and teaches me to dance, to laugh.... He sets me free from every prison and stronghold, and He sets my feet upon solid Rock. He protects me from EVERY weapon, and fights with ferocity every one of my enemies. He is trustworthy. He is in relentless pursuit of me, and will NOT let me fail. He calls me His own. I am His and He is mine.

Star Student
My Joey is start student this week, and his teacher has the coolest ideas for celebrating her students. Today I got to write Joey's class a letter telling them a story about my Joe. Here's what his class is reading as we speak:
My Funny Boy
When Joey was born, he was such a happy baby. He
was so curious about life, rarely cried (except for in the car, that is until
we turned his car seat around. I think he just wanted to see the world!), and he
loved to watch and laugh at his brothers.
Joey’s sense of humor developed at a very early
age. Also born in him was the thrill for adventure! When Joey was first
learning how to walk, is when I discovered that he understood ‘funny’ and
wasn’t simply laughing because others were.
Joey’s dad and I had to teach Joey how to scoot on
his bottom up and down the stairs because he always wanted to do things,
“Myself, “ as he like to put it. Even during swim lessons, he’d push away from
us and didn’t care if he sunk to the bottom! He was born tuff! Anyhow, he was
scooting down the stairs one morning, and I was standing at the very bottom
waiting for him. When he came to the landing (the two big, wide steps between
the top stairs and the bottom stairs), he stood up on the edge contemplating
his next move.
“No-no Joe-Joe, come down on your bottom.” I said.
He ignored me with a twinkle in his eye as he
thought about “walking” down the steps like a big person. I reminded him again
of how he is allowed to come down the stair (remember, he was just learning how to walk!). Instead of
heading my warnings, he took a step and fell –the wall caught is forehead! I
started to run up the bottom half of the steps, to help him. Before I was able
to get to him, he stood up, put his tiny hand up to his owie and said, “Head!
Funny!” He then proceeded to start laughing, a deep-down-big-huge-belly-laugh. And I laughed too!
Joey is one of the funniest and also the strongest
boys that I know! I hope you enjoyed this funny little memory!
Love,
Joey’s Mom (Melissa)
Here are some pictures of Joey when he was little:

GF Almond Butter Cookies **3 Ingredients**
Truthfully, I have had a terrible time baking GF. I know there is a million and one sites boasting The Best GF recipes, but I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants baker. You know? If I don't have it on hand, I create my own substitutions. Crappy thing is, I don't know how to cook with GF flours, and it takes like 50 ingredients to make all-purpose flour! What is sorghum flour anyway?!?! And seriously! Who has this on-hand?
And let me just confess that I want a dang cookie so bad, I could eat my arm! Lol! A good, non-grainy, doesn't cost me $5 for one, cookie. This obsessing brought me to my recipes to see which ones I could convert, and boy did it ever pay off.
I came across an old flour-less peanut butter cookie recipe that I use to make all the time 13 years ago. Why 13 years? My middle boy was born with a severe peanut allergy, and alternatives were not yet available, so this little gem was tucked away.
This is the original recipe:
1 cup Peanut Butter
1 cup Sugar
1 Egg
Cook at 375 for 9-12mins.
Easy-peasy right! And they were to die for!
This is how I changed it up a bit:
1 cup Almond Butter
1 cup Coconut Sugar
1 Egg
Optional:
2 Blocks of Baker's Chocolate
1 tsp Cinnamon
Cook at 375 for 9-12mins
