Today I spent some time reflecting on and thinking about MLK: who he was, what he stood for, what he believed, how he dreamed, how he fought, his determination, his strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly his heart that was sold out, in love, and totally devoted to Jesus Christ. I stand in awe of his character!
Here's a thought that I pondered for several minutes: would MKL be who he was, accomplish what all he did, stand strong in the face of adversity, or even care about human suffering, IF he did not have a life that was surrendered to following Christ! My answer: I think not! No man would have the guts nor the stamina to persevere in the face of so much opposition --deadly opposition.
MLK was a man who believed he could do all things through Christ, who gave him the strength to hang in there, even when the going got tough. He was a man who believed that we all are undeniably (because the bible says so) created in ONE imagine equally! He was a man who believed that ALL people should experience and have access to compassion, mercy, grace, justice, and love because that is exactly what the bible says God IS!
I can hear it already.....but he was an adulterer! I know, and believe me I was totally devastated when I learned that sad fact when I was in college. Devastated because adultery is the one sin I have the hardest time finding forgiveness for --it's that proverbial speed bump I get high centered on! God asks us to love the sinner, hate the sin, but for me that is a difficult task when it comes to adultery. I 'm hard pressed to hate the sinner, loathe the sin! Not a good heart position, and I'm working on it. And I know there are far worse sins in this world: abuse (sexually and physically), murder, addictions, ect.... But we all have that one sin that makes us cringe or react harshly too, mine is adultery. All that said, here's what God has to say to us about that: "Let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!" I'll quietly and respectfully exit stage left on that note! :)
My greatest take away: MLK was just a man, flesh and blood, just like me! He didn't have super human strength nor supernatural powers. We all have the ability to to passionately pursue a cause that is bigger than we are, and not just pursue it but forever change the world. The question is: are we going to? MLK embraced who he was in Christ and his God-given commission with an unrelenting zeal, and was able to change a nation! That, my friends is worth mimicking!
